The “Sharpie 500″ No More; Irwin Taking Over In 2010

Enjoy tonight’s running of the Sharpie 500. It will be the last one you ever see.

At least with that name, anyway.

Irwin Industrial Tools, sponsor of Jamie McMurray’s #26 car, will be taking over as the title sponsor of the race. And though the race will still be 500 laps, the name of the race will be unique. The Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol will be one of only two Sprint Cup Series points races not to hold a number in its title, the other being the annual road course race at Watkins Glen.

Sharpie has been the title sponsor of the annual summer classic at Bristol since 2001. The Sharpie 500 has become one of the most recognized race names in NASCAR. Losing the name will be like losing a small piece of the sport. Lots of memories were made under the name “Sharpie 500″, but plenty more will be made under the race’s new name as well.

Next year, race fans will be marking their calenders, in anticipation of the Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol.
