When it Comes to Johnson “Haters”, the Media Misses Their Point

AUTHOR: Ben Montedonico | IN: NASCAR | COMMENTS: None Yet

You hear it all the time now that Jimmie Johnson has accomplished this unprecedented feat.
Those labeled as “Haters”(i.e. anybody who doesn’t like Jimmie Johnson) make a point stating that NASCAR is fake, or that everything that is done in NASCAR is a big act, or that Rick Hendrick is funneling money into NASCAR so that they will allow his teams to cheat.
They make accusations that may or may not be true, and then the media chimes in with brilliant counter-points.
They bring up post-race inspection, and how, if Hendrick’s teams(or in this case, the #48) were cheating, NASCAR would catch them. [...]

Time to Compromise in NASCAR

AUTHOR: Ben Montedonico | IN: NASCAR | COMMENTS: 7 Comments

It seems that nobody can agree on a championship formula.
On one side, you have the old-school fans/Jimmie Johnson “haters” who believe that the old system is the way to go. It may not have been the most exciting formula, but it was always fair, and did produce some tight points finishes.
On the other side, you have the newer fans/Jimmie Johnson fans who believe that the new Chase system is the way to go. Though it may not produce the most deserving champion, it tends to at least make things a little more interesting.
These two sides can’t seem to agree on [...]

Does This Story End With Dale Earnhardt Jr. Hoisting the Trophy in 2010?

AUTHOR: Ben Montedonico | IN: NASCAR | COMMENTS: 5 Comments

Now that Hendrick Motorsports has history out of the way, the team is now ready to focus on getting NASCAR’s Most Popular Driver back near the top.
According to Yahoo.com, getting Dale Earnhardt Jr’s team back on track is Hendrick Motorsports’ “top priority”.
Team owner Rick Hendrick said about getting the struggling #88 team out of its slump:
“We’re all over it, and we’ve been all over it. It’s my primary focus here, starting Monday.”
Without Hendrick Motorsports having a driver with a long history of struggling in 2009, combined with Junior’s seemingly endless struggles during 2009, fans had to come to a conclusion that [...]

NASCAR Hands Jimmie Johnson History, 4th Straight Championship

AUTHOR: Ben Montedonico | IN: NASCAR | COMMENTS: 5 Comments

Jimmie Johnson made history on Sunday by becoming the first driver ever to win 4 straight NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championships. Johnson stands alone in that category, but I am about to tell you, from a die-hard NASCAR fan’s perspective, why this unprecedented accomplishment will forever have an asterisk next to it in many fans’ minds.
And no, it has nothing to do with Johnson being a guy who wins a lot or the fact that he is from the west coast.
Let’s put aside for a moment, if you will, all of the questions surrounding Jimmie Johnson’s success. Let’s put aside four years [...]

Hamlin vs. Keselowski: Is This What Revenge and Rivalry is Coming to in NASCAR?

AUTHOR: Ben Montedonico | IN: NASCAR | COMMENTS: 3 Comments

30 years ago, in the 1979 Daytona 500, a pair of drivers fought a war against each other for 200 laps. On the last of those, the two made contact battling for the win in NASCAR’s most prestigious event, lost control of their cars, and careened into the outside wall.
Neither of them won, and afterwards, the two started fighting.
That’s right. In front of millions of viewers, the two drivers, gloves off, on the apron of turn 3, got into a fist fight.
Video: Rivalry in 1979
That was the first-ever televised NASCAR race, and it brought millions of fans to the sport.
That’s [...]

Kyle Busch Wins Nationwide Championship

AUTHOR: Ben Montedonico | IN: NASCAR | COMMENTS: None Yet

After 5 years of trying, Kyle Busch won his first championship in one of NASCAR’s premier divisions. Busch merely needed to start Saturday’s race at Homestead-Miami Speedway to clinch the NASCAR Nationwide Series title.
But that wasn’t enough for Busch, who held of a Kansas-like charge from his Nationwide Series rival, Carl Edwards, to win the Ford 300 as well. Busch became the first NASCAR Nationwide Series champion to win the season finale since 1983, when Sam Ard(who else) accomplished the same feat.
Congratulations to Kyle Busch on his first championship of what is likely to be many!
Note: Denny Hamlin did get [...]

Jimmie Johnson is Happy With His Team; Kasey Kahne Isn’t

AUTHOR: Ben Montedonico | IN: NASCAR | COMMENTS: None Yet

Jimmie Johnson and Kasey Kahne both have somewhat similar stories.
One was called “The next Jeff Gordon”, while the other’s car is co-owned by Jeff Gordon. Both came from the Busch(now Nationwide) Series without much success, each having just one win apiece. Both have driven for just one race team in their Cup careers. Both drivers own Lowe’s Motor Speedway. And both can be referred to as excellent racers.
The difference: One driver is happy with his team, while the other isn’t so much.
Jimmie Johnson inked a deal with Hendrick Motorsports today that will have him driving for the organization through 2015, and likely [...]
