RIP Bengals WR Chris Henry

AUTHOR: Ben Montedonico | IN: NASCAR | COMMENTS: None Yet

I am sad to say that the wide world of sports has lost another young star.
Cincinatti Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry passed away this morning due to injuries he sustained falling out of the back of a truck.
At 26, Henry’s short life was troubled. Not much unlike a fellow NASCAR brother of ours whom we lost earlier this year, Kevin Grubb. But Henry was trying to pull through, and was doing so successfully until his untimely passing.
I know that Henry was a football player, and that this is a NASCAR blog. But the world of sports is tight, and when [...]

Marty Reid: Why NASCAR’s Chase Will Be Slightly Less Boring in 2010

AUTHOR: Ben Montedonico | IN: NASCAR | COMMENTS: 3 Comments

Ladies and gentlemen of NASCAR nation, I have good news.
I just saved a ton of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico.
I’m just kidding, and no, that’s not a plug. I don’t even have Geico.
But guess what? Several of you fans have been demanding a change in the ESPN announcers booth, and now, you’re finally going to get it.
Jerry Punch is out; Marty Reid is in.
That’s right, ESPN’s NASCAR play-by-play announcer since NASCAR’s return to the network in 2007, Jerry Punch, will be replaced by the network’s 2009 Nationwide Series and Indy Racing League play-by-play announcer, Marty Reid. And [...]

Brian France is Influential? Oh Dear, We’re in Trouble!

AUTHOR: Ben Montedonico | IN: NASCAR | COMMENTS: 17 Comments

Guess what everybody? Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal has named NASCAR CEO and czar Brian France as the 16th most influential person in sports business.
That’s right. Brian France. Influential.
The article states:
“Jim France, Brian’s uncle, might technically own NASCAR, but Brian still runs it. The son of Bill France Jr., Brian oversees the day-to-day operations and the unit chiefs report directly to him. Brian is still the best-positioned France to dictate the direction of the sport, whether through instituting cost containment measures for teams, tweaking the Chase for the Sprint Cup format or setting the overall agenda. And if he decides [...]

Who Were the Best NASCAR Drivers of the Decade?

AUTHOR: Ben Montedonico | IN: NASCAR | COMMENTS: 15 Comments

10 years of racing have passed since the green flag waved over the 2000 Daytona 500. During that time, several changes have come to the sport we call NASCAR, in each of the three major series.
From the loss of a hero, to the green-white-checkered, double-file restarts, the lucky dog, and even a new car and points system, hundreds of drivers have had to overcome changes to the sport in order to best the competition.
Today, I would like to give a shout-out to those who did just that in each of the top 3 series in NASCAR.
These are the drivers who [...]

If Barack Obama Was a NASCAR Driver…

AUTHOR: Ben Montedonico | IN: NASCAR | COMMENTS: 5 Comments

This is all in fun…
It was 6:00 P.M. at the time I was writing this, and I didn’t have anything to do. I was on Facebook and decided to take the quiz, “Which NASCAR Driver Are You?”.
Except, as a little twist, I decided to take the quiz answering the questions as if I were President Barack Obama. For kicks and giggles.
The first question was, “Which personality do you have?” Given the choices, I had to say “stuck up”. Really quick, for you Obama fans, among the other choices were “homoish”(not a real word), “stupid”, and “complanitory”(also not a real word). It [...]

Danica Patrick is Coming to NASCAR. Officially.

AUTHOR: Ben Montedonico | IN: NASCAR | COMMENTS: 3 Comments

The NASCAR world as we know it is coming to an end.
Indycar diva Danica Patrick has teamed up with Dale Earnhardt Jr’s NASCAR Nationwide Series team and will drive a partial Nationwide schedule for JR Motorsports in 2010. She has signed with the team through 2011, and will drive the #7 Godaddy.com Chevrolet.
Patrick’s NASCAR schedule will not interfere with her IRL schedule.
So is Patrick’s move good or bad for NASCAR?
Well, for one thing, it will likely bring more money in for the sport. But NASCAR as a sport is swimming in sponsorship dollars, and has been for several years. It seems [...]

What it Takes to Win a NASCAR Championship

AUTHOR: Ben Montedonico | IN: NASCAR | COMMENTS: 3 Comments

Because I’m bored…
In numbers, what does it take to win a NASCAR championship?
It is actually quite simple. I have devised a formula to show you exactly what it took this year for Jimmie Johnson to win the championship. And when you look at it, you’ll see that it actually wasn’t that difficult.
First, he had to make the Chase. The final driver to make the Chase in 2009 was Brian Vickers, who scored 3,203 points over the course of 26 races. So divide:
3,203 points/26 races
To get:
123 points.
Now we’ll take a peek at our points chart and see where the number 123 [...]

President Barack Obama Gets “Snubbed” at “Stewies”

AUTHOR: Ben Montedonico | IN: NASCAR | COMMENTS: 3 Comments

Several people took home trophies Thursday night from the 3rd annual “Stewie” Awards.
The 44th president was not one of them.
President Barack Obama had been nominated for the “Best Vocal Performance ‘Stewie’” for inviting the NASCAR drivers to the White House, but failed to win it.
President Obama made for a controversial nominee to begin with, for two reasons.
First, NASCAR is a predominantly conservative sport. In recent years, however, its westward migration towards California and surounding areas, as well as its leaders’ strict rule over the sport had begun turning NASCAR into more of a liberal sport. Giving a liberal president an award, after not [...]

Greg Biffle’s Pit Crew is the Best in 2009

AUTHOR: Ben Montedonico | IN: NASCAR | COMMENTS: None Yet

Jimmie Johnson’s pit crew may be standing around holding 4 fingers up in the air as if to indicate the true NASCAR fans’ average I.Q. level(at least, according to Brian France), but Greg Biffle’s crew was the best.
Biffle’s #16 3M team won the Tissot Pit Crew Challenge for the 2009 season. They were the fastest pit crew in 6 out of the 36 races in 2009; more than any other team. Jeff Gordon’s crew was second as they were the fastest 5 races out of 36 during the 2009 season.
Biffle’s crew won $100,000, Tissot watches, and an all-expenses paid trip to [...]

Barack Obama Now Nominated for a “Stewie” Award

AUTHOR: Ben Montedonico | IN: NASCAR | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

This is for real, people.
Barack Obama, you know, the guy who lives in a luxurious white house in Washington D.C. and does nothing but give lazy people China’s money, apologize for our great country, and win prestigious awards for no apparent reason, has been nominated for  YET ANOTHER award.
Obama is up  for the “Stewie” Award for “Best Vocal Performance”, which honors the year’s most memorable quote in NASCAR. In case you were wondering(or cared) what the “Stewie” Awards are, they are a group of awards given out by NASCAR driver Tony Stewart on his radio show at the end of the season. They are [...]
