That’s not a typo, folks. Denny Hamlin, injured knee and all, was the fastest driverin the first practice session at Phoenix International Raceway. Hamlin turned a time of 27.437 seconds, which was just over two-tenths of a second faster than 2nd-place Michael McDowell.
Hamlin drove a total of 22 laps during the session, before Casey Mears replaced him to get a feel for the car.
No word yet on who will qualify the #11 car, but Hamlin does plan to start the race.
