They say, as a leader, the best way to lead is to lead by example. AJ Allmendinger is ready to lead by example.
Almost immediately after signing a contract extension with his current team, Richard Petty Motorsports, last week, Allmendinger told everybody that he is ready to step into that leadership role next season.
On Sunday, he went out and proved it.
Allmendinger qualified fourth at Watkins Glen, and ran in the top 5 literally all afternoon, en route to a fourth-place finish. It was his first top 5 finish since his third-place effort in the 2009 Daytona 500.
Allmendinger said after the race how proud he was of his guys. But I wouldn’t hesitate to believe that his guys were proud of him as well. Allmendinger has had a few rough patches this season, including a run-in with his team owner, Richard Petty, back at Daytona in July.
But that’s in the past now, and Allmendinger is ready to lead his team to victory.
We don’t know how many teams RPM will have next year. We don’t know if AJ will have three teammates, two teammates, one teammate, or none. But what we do know is that, whoever he has on his team, AJ Allmendinger is ready to lead them.
And he’s ready to lead by example.
