As long as a driver can finish consistently in the top 10 they probably have a good chance of winning the cup without winning a race. I think there should be some sort of points reward for winning a race because without it a driver looking to win the cup will just coast a long as long as they are in a position that keeps them in the lead for the points or at least in the top 10 for the chase.
