David Reutimann Leads First Day Of Daytona Testing

Clint Bowyer and David Reutimann won Thursday’s two test sessions at the newly-paved Daytona International Raceway.

Bowyer had the fastest time of the first session at 48.855 seconds or just a tad over 184 miles per hour. Bowyer was the only driver to break the 184 mph. mark in the first session.

Reutimann had the fastest overall time on Thursday, as he took the second session with a time of 45.970 seconds or close to 196 mph. Reutimann, along with teammate Martin Truex Jr. and fellow Toyota drivers Brian Vickers and Kasey Kahne, all ran speeds over 194 mph. in the second session, as they were the only drivers to practice any sort of drafting on the session’s first day.

Tony Stewart had the fastest single-car speed in the second session at 48.165 seconds or just shy of 187 mph., but since his fast lap was so much better than the next driver behind him(Jeff Gordon, 48.744, 184.638 mph.), it is possible that his lap was somewhat draft-assisted as well.

Thursday also marked Steve Wallace’s first time behind the wheel of a Sprint Cup car. The son of 1989 Cup champ Rusty Wallace placed dead-last in both sessions in the #77 Toyota owned by his father, but made it through both sessions without incident.
