Danica Patrick did something on Saturday that no other woman has ever done in history. On lap 30 of the Drive4COPD 300 at Daytona, Danica Patrick crossed the start/finish line in first place, with the help of Clint Bowyer. In doing so, she became the first woman to ever lead a lap in NASCAR-sanctioned competition at Daytona. Patrick would only lead the one lap, and being unable to fully figure out the two-car tango quickly caused her to fall deep in the lead pack and eventually off the lead lap. Kurt Busch and Jeff Burton won Thursday’s Gatorade Duel races at Daytona, but it was two rookies who caught the attention of the spectators. Trevor Bayne started second in Duel #2, and from the drop of the green flag the 19-year old was hooked to the back of 3-time Daytona 500 winner Jeff Gordon. Looking out for the greater good of the drivers, or taking back control? One of these NASCAR is attempting to do by making technical changes to the cars at Daytona in an effort to slow down their outrageously fast speeds. The question is, which one? Should Denny Hamlin have gotten credit for winning the 2011 Budweiser Shootout instead of Kurt Busch? In the closing feet of the 2011 NASCAR season’s first race, Denny Hamlin made a pass on the inside of leader Ryan Newman that was deemed to be below the yellow line, and thus, illegal. Kurt Busch, who passed Newman on the outside, finished second and with Hamlin’s disqualification, was declared the winner. By now you’ve heard about the new rule changes NASCAR has implemented for this season to make the racing better(if you haven’t, you don’t follow racing and thus probably have no interest in this blog). Personally, I like the changes. But there are still some people out there who probably believe that the rule changes were made to help 5-time defending champion Jimmie Johnson(or at least, not hurt him). NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Michael Annett was arrested early Sunday morning on charges of driving while intoxicated. Annett was reportedly registered at 4 times the legal blood/alcohal level. He was charged with DWI and resisting an officer while he was being handcuffed. Annett has since been released and has issued a formal apology. The Rusty Wallace Racing driver stated that his arrest is a “truly life-changing experience” that will hopefully help him “make positive changes in his life.” Nobody truly knows what prompts athletes to do dumb things off the field or off the track. With the changing points system and the numerous driver storylines coming into the 2011 season, one major new development has gone relatively unnoticed. For the upcoming season, NASCAR has designed a new nose for the front of its race cars. The new nose is sleeker, sharper, and makes the vehicle look like a totally different race car.
