The Daytona 500 winner is back and even better than he was before he left.
20-year old Trevor Bayne made his NASCAR return Saturday night, participating in his first event since being sidelined for several weeks with an unknown illness. Bayne started 31st in Saturday night’s STP 300 Nationwide Series race and finished a season-best third, coming just shy of his first career NNS win. His finish also tied his career best in the series.
Bayne’s extended time away from the track seemed to do him some good. Prior to missing several races, Bayne had only notched one top 5 in 8 races this season in the Nationwide Series, and had not finished inside the top 15 on the Sprint Cup side following his dramatic upset victory in the Daytona 500.
Some wondered if Bayne’s illness would be season-ending or even career-threatening, so the fact that Bayne was able to race at all comes as a huge relief to his nation of fans.
The fact that he’s not only competitive, but possibly better than before, is simply icing on the cake.
