Jimmie Johnson is the defending Sonoma winner from last years Toyota/Save Mart 350. Can he repeat to get back-to-back wins at Sonoma?
Here are some drivers to watch for Sunday’s race on TNT at 3 PM EST.
Jimmie Johnson – In the last two races at Sonoma, Jimmie Johnson has 1 win with an average finish of 2.50. Johnson also has led 55 laps and has an average start of 6.5.
Tony Stewart – Smoke has two wins at Sonoma with an average finish of 5.50 in the last two races, leading 13 laps with an average start position of 5.5. Stewart has 7 road course victories; 5 at Watkins Glen and 2 at Sonoma, watch out for Smoke on Sunday.
Jeff Gordon – Gordon has the most road course wins of any active driver currently in the Sprint Cup series with 9 wins, Gordon should be a contender on Sunday. Gordon has 5 wins at Sonoma with an average finish of 7.00 since ’09. Jeff Gordon will be looking for win #6 at Sonoma on Sunday and his third win in 2011.
Juan Pablo Montoya – Say what you want about Montoya, he is one of the most talented road course racers in the Sprint Cup series today. Montoya has two wins in the Sprint Cup Series and both of them victories were road course races – 1 at Sonoma and 1 at Watkins Glen. Since ’09 Montoya has an average finish of 8.00 with two top 10′s. Surprisingly Montoya hasn’t led any laps in the last two races at Sonoma.
Marcos Ambrose – Seems like Ambrose is the favorite for this weekends race at Sonoma, he did have the race won a year ago and ran out of fuel that cost him his first win in the Sprint Cup Series. If you go around the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series garage and talk to the drivers, many of them will say Marcos Ambrose is far and away the most talented road-course racer on the circuit. In the last two races at Sonoma, Ambrose has an average finish of 4.50 leading 35 laps. Note: Would be much higher had he not ran out of fuel in last years race. If Ambrose wins on Sunday, it would immediately spark talk of a wild card berth for the Australian. Should Ambrose sweep the road courses, he would be in outstanding position to make the Chase. And it’s entirely possible that could happen. Watch out for Ambrose on Sunday!
My pick for this Sunday’s race:
Stewart is in need of a win as he currently sits in 11th place in the Sprint Cup Point Standings. This is the time for Stewart to showcase his road course talents and get his #14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevy in Victory Lane for the first time this year!
