As I posted earlier this week, sources told ESPN.com’s David Newton that Mark Martin was going to drive for Michael Waltrip Racing in 2012. In a press conference today at Texas Motor Speedway, Waltrip confirmed the reports that Martin will be driving the #00 car.
Michael Watrip announced that Mark Martin will be driving a 25-race schedule, while Michael Waltrip will drive the remaining races after Martin’s 25 race schedule is over. They also announced that Martin will also drive the #00 in 2013, so its a two-year contract. “We are hiring a future Hall of Famer.” Waltrip said.
“It is the perfect schedule for me. Enables me to catch my breath and spend more time with the fans.” Martin said.
Waltrip also said that those 6 races that he will be racing, are the races where the car is unsponsored. “We are looking for sponors and drivers.”
As i’ve said before, Waltrip definitely has brought together veterans to this MWR stable that Waltrip has never had. But the question will remain whether that group can actually contend for the Chase in 2012 and win races?
