First Lady Michelle Obama to be NASCAR Grand Marshall for Ford 400

“Gentlemen, start your engines!”

Famous words soon to be uttered by … Michelle Obama?

First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, will give the command to start the final race of the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup season. Obama and Dr. Biden will be at Homestead-Miami Speedway to support Joining Forces, an initiative to mobilize all sectors of society to give our service memmbers and their families the opportunities and support they have earned.  The crowd will include 5,000 active duty and retired military personnel and families, and a military family will join the grand marshals as they carry out their duties.

Homestead-Miami Speedway is just a short drive from Homestead Air Reserve Base, which hosts the Florida Air National Guard, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency.

The announcement from the White House comes a week after President Barack Obama and his wife, attended the first-ever Carrier Classic basketball game on board the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson

Supporting the troops has been a huge initiative for the sports world. In late October, military families attended Game 1 of the 2011 World Series in St. Louis. First Lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden also attended that game as part of the Joining Forces initiative.

Generally, Michelle Obama’s name has not been connected to NASCAR, but the first lady’s work for military families ties in nicely with the event.

And of course, as a nice added bonus, Florida is kind of important in 2012 politics.
