Joey Logano passed his Sprint Cup teammate Kyle Busch in a Drag Race to Talladega’s extended finish line in the Aaron’s 312 on Saturday. Logano won his first race at Nascar’s longest Super Speedway by .034 seconds as new points leader Ricky Stenhouse Jr. finished 3rd. Former points leader Elliott Sadler finished 10th.
Logano was given a gift during the Green-White-Checker finish when Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and drafting partner Cole Whitt couldn’t make enough of a run to pull along side. This gave him the room to pull out and make it a drag race to the Checkerd Flag. The race was Red Flagged at Lap 117 to clear the second Big One of the day. Eric McClure, driver of the #14 Toyota lost control of his car and slammed into the inside wall and had to be cut out of his race car. He was airlifted to a local hospital for further tests and observation.
Danica Patrick finished 13th in the race and promptly punted Sam Hornish Jr. into the wall. She was upset because Hornish came up the track and almost pinched her against the wall. He said after the race that he had cut a tire down and couldn’t turn his car, but Danica didn’t seem to believe him. There was no trip to the White Hauler, but indications were that Nascar had scolded them for the spat. Danica Patrick and Sam Hornish Jr. have been feuding since driving Go Karts. The feud continued to their days in the Indy Racing League.
I don’t know about you, but I got goose bumps when the Black #3, Driven by Austin Dillon, Team Owner Richard Childress’ grandson, took the lead early in the race. A moment that we have seen many times in the past as Dale Earnhardt put his Mr. Goodwrench Chevy in Victory Lane 10 times at this storied track in a Cup Car. Dale Jr. finished 5th Saturday.
This was Joey Logano’s first win at Talladega where he has finished in the top 5, four out of four times in the Nationwide Series. He has shown his ability on the restrictor plate tracks with 3 top 5′s and 4 top tens at Daytona International Speedway. Now it’s on to the Cup Race today where he will start 30th.
