Denver, Colo., based team, Furniture Row Racing is honoring the victims of the July 20, 2012, movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., in Sunday’s Brickyard 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
According to a release from Furniture Row Racing, the shop the No. 78 Chevrolet team, with driver Regan Smith, is based out of is about seven miles from the theater in which the tragedy occurred.
The names of the 12 individuals killed in Aurora will be listed on the rear quarter panels of the No. 78 car this weekend. The hood of the car will feature a memorial cross and a logo from the Colorado state flag. The rear bumper will read, “For those lost, those injured and countless acts of bravery 7/20/12.”
“Our hearts go out to the victims and to their families,” Furniture Row Racing General Manager Joe Garone said. “It really hits close to home for us here in Colorado. We mourn the loss of life from this senseless tragedy and feel we also need to stand up and acknowledge the heroism of those people who put their lives on the line to save others. Our thoughts this weekend will be with all the people who suffered from this horrific act of violence.”
The tragedy hit close to home at Furniture Row Racing for more reasons than locality. Kimber Avra, a Furniture Row employees was at the theater with a friend, and that friend was one of the 12 killed.
