Tebow's college car gets Petty makeover

Richard Petty may have moved on from Petty Enterprises to become co-owner and namesake of Richard Petty Motorsports, but the old Petty Enterprises shop in Level Cross, N.C., isn’t sitting empty. Instead, it has become home to Petty’s Garage, a company the seven-time champion and NASCAR Hall of Famer started to restore and customize vehicles.

Most have probably heard of one of the most recent customers of Petty’s Garage — New York Jets quarterback and former University of Florida standout, Tim Tebow. Petty’s Garage recently took on the task of restoring Tebow’s college ride, a 1995 Ford Thunderbird, to be used to raise money for Tebow’s charitable foundation. According to the Sporting News, funds raised will be used to support orphanage and hospital-related efforts in the Philippines.

Tebow is paying Petty’s Garage for the work, but according to Tim Tebow Foundation Executive Director Erik Dellenback, Petty’s Garage is are giving the football star a “phenomenal deal.”

“Hopefully, when we’re done, Tim and his folks will be proud of it and can use it for their charity events,” Petty said, according to the Sporting News. “I know we’re going to use it for some of our Petty’s Garage mobile tour, and that will be a good piece for us to show off.”

The car had about 80,000 miles on it but didn’t run when received by Petty’s Garage. Several parts of the body and shifter from the original car will be carried over to the new creation. Through the more than 800 man hours that are expected to be spent on the car, a 5.0-liter Coyote Ford engine boasting more than 500 hp will be among the upgrades, as will new front and rear suspension and custom seats.

The car is expected to be on display during Speedweeks at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in February and throughout the year at various Tim Tebow Foundation events. It’ll be auctioned off sometime around the end of the year.
