Martin Truex Jr. on pole for Sprint Showdown

Not everyone in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series has a place already secured in the Sprint All-Star Race for Saturday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway. For those who don’t, there’s the Sprint Showdown, a preliminary even at the track ran just prior to the main event. The drivers trying to race their way in to the All-Star Race through the Sprint Showdown qualified on Friday for their starting positions for the Showdown. Martin Truex claimed the pole starting spot with a lap time of 27.918 seconds.

Truex will be joined on the front row by Jamie McMurray, who qualified second. Starting third will be McMurray’s Earnhardt Ganassi Racing teammate, Juan Montoya.

Twenty-three drivers posted qualifying times for the Sprint Showdown, and all will compete in the race on Saturday evening. The top-two finishers of the Sprint Showdown will advance to the All-Star race, as will the top vote-getter in an online fan vote, provided the fan vote winner finishes the Sprint Showdown on the lead lap.
