Dirt brings new faces to Truck Series

With the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series taking to the dirt for the first time, ever, with Wednesday’s running of the Mudsummer Classic at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, several drivers not normally seen in Camping World Truck Series competition headed to the Tony Stewart-owned track to play in the dirt.

Thirty-six drivers are on the entry list for Wednesday night; 30 of those will emerge from the qualifying, or heat, races to compete in the 150-lap main event. Included in the list of those set to compete in trucks on Wednesday include former Nationwide and Sprint Cup series driver Dave Blaney, who will join Brad Keselowski Racing in a one-off deal to be a teammate to his son, Ryan Blaney. Dave Blaney will be in the No. 19, while Ryan Blaney will be in his normal No. 29.

Sprint Cup Series regular Ryan Newman also plans a rare start in Truck Series competition. He’ll be in a No. 34 Turner Scott Motorsports entry. In addition to Newman and the team’s regular Truck Series drivers, James Buescher (No. 31) and Miguel Paludo (No. 32), Kyle Larson also makes a return to the series in a TSM truck, driving the No. 30. Larson, now a regular on the Nationwide circuit, scored his first Truck Series win earlier this year.

“I’m ready to have some fun at Eldora,” Newman said. “We tested at 311 Motor Speedway, and that was an interesting experience in the truck, to say the least. Trucks on a dirt track are completely different from cars.”

Scott Bloomquist joins the Kyle Busch Motorsports camp to drive the No. 51, joining the team’s regular drivers, Joey Coulter (No. 18) and Darrell Wallace Jr. (No. 54) for some dirt track racing. Meanwhile, ThorSport Racing adds Tracy Hines to its driver stable, as a teammate to series regulars Johnny Sauter (No. 98) and Matt Crafton (No. 88).

“It will be very exciting,” Bloomquist said of climbing into a truck. “It’s going to be something different, I’m sure, but it’s a race car, and I’ve driven a lot of race cars — never a truck, but it’s still a race car.”
