Michael McDowell will join Front Row Motorsports this weekend for a one-race deal with the team to drive the No. 35 Ford in Sunday’s Cheez-It 355 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series road course race at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International. The No. 35 is normally driven by Josh Wise.
“This is a unique opportunity,” McDowell said. “I’m excited to drive the 35 car. We tested there last week and had a couple of good days. Road course races are an opportunity for me to shine a little bit.”
Sunday’s race will be McDowell’s first with Front Row Motorsports. He has road course experience across several racing series that includes two-top fives and three top-10 finishes at The Glen in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series. This weekend’s race will be McDowell’s fifth Sprint Cup start at the track.
“I’ve run a lot of races at Watkins Glen,” McDowell said. “I ran the Six Hours of The Glen multiple times and short endurance races in prototypes and GT cars. I’ve run Continental Tire races there. . . . Not counting Sprint Cup, I’ve probably raced there about 10 times.”
The Cheez-It 355 is scheduled to take the green flag shortly after 1 p.m. ET on Sunday. The race may be seen live on ESPN, with pre-race coverage set to start at noon ET.
