Regan Smith, driver of the No. 7 JR Motorsports Chevrolet in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, will be pulling sem-double duty at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway this weekend. In addition to his Nationwide Series duties in preparation for Friday night’s Virginia 529 College Savings 250 Nationwide race at the track, he’ll also be the interim driver of the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series on Friday, in place of regular driver Jimmie Johnson.
Johnson’s wife, Chandra, gave birth to the couple’s second daughter at 2:02 a.m. Friday morning in Charlotte, N.C. The baby weighted five lbs. and 10 ozs. and was 19 inches long. Johnson is spending Friday in Charlotte with his wife and new daughters.
As a result, Smith will practice and qualify the No. 48 on Friday. Johnson will be at Richmond on Saturday night to race his car in the Federated Auto Parts 400. Johnson, who is the Sprint Cup Series championship points leader is already locked into the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
