As a result of rain at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway on Saturday, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series qualifying for Sunday’s Camping World RV Sales 500 was cancelled. The starting grid for Sunday’s race was set based on practice speeds from Friday. Aric Almirola will start on the pole, with Jeff Burton alongside on the front row.
Marcos Ambrose and Martin Truex Jr. will share the second row, while Carl Edwards will start fifth, the only Chase for the Sprint Cup competitor in the top-five. The only other two Chase drivers starting in the top-10 will be Edwards’ Roush Fenway Racing teammate Greg Biffle in sixth and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in eighth.
Other top-10 starters will be David Ragan in seventh, Jamie McMurray ninth and Casey Mears in 10th.
The top-two drivers in the championship points standings, Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson will start in the closest of proximities, sharing the sixth row, as Johnson will start 11th and Kenseth 12th.
Nationwide Series regular Sam Hornish Jr. was scheduled to make a now-rare Sprint Cup Series start on Sunday, but needing to get his No. 12 Penske Racing Ford entry on qualifying speed and qualifying getting rained out, Hornish was the lone driver among the 44 entered to not get a spot on Sunday’s starting grid.
