“Being selected by the fans to be on the cover of NASCAR ’14 is a huge honor,” Stewart said. “It’s been a long couple of months, but my fans’ passion has been one of the driving factors in helping me rehab and my ability to prepare for returning to the race car in February.”
Stewart, who missed the end of the 2013 Sprint Cup Series season because of a broken leg, won cover honors after fans cast over 700,000 votes in a “Drive for the Cover” fan-vote contest to determine which driver would be on the game cover. Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the honor last year in the first “Drive for the Cover” competition. Stewart has been on a NASCAR game cover before, previous to fans voting for their favorite driver to be featured.
“In the midst of a racing season cut short by injury, the number of fans who voted for Tony speaks volumes about the excitement surrounding his return,” NASCAR Vice President of Licensing and Consumer Products Blake Davidson said.
This year’s contest, conducted on Facebook, spanned five weeks and multiple rounds, with Stewart dominating each round. In all, he claimed nearly 20 percent of the votes.
The game is expected to be released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in early 2014.
