Billy Scott has been promoted to the role of crew chief on the No. 55 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team for driver Brian Vickers, according to an announcement on Thursday from Michael Waltrip Racing. Scott was the No. 55 team engineer in 2012 and 2013.
“I’ve been around Billy the last two seasons, and he’s demonstrated a strong knowledge of what makes these cars go fast,” Vickers said. “I have a lot of faith in Billy. This is one of the strongest teams I’ve had, and that’s a great feeling, heading into a new season.”
Rodney Childers worked as crew chief on the No. 55 team until August 2013. With Childers atop the pit box, Vickers won at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon in July of this past season. In the time since Childers’ departure, though, MWR Executive Vice President of Competition Scott Miller has been fulfilling crew chief duties with the team on an interim basis.
“I’m honored, but I also know this is a big responsibility,” Scott said of his new job. “We have very high expectations for the Aaron’s Dream Machine in 2014. Brian has been incredible to work with and is a winner, so we can’t wait to get 2014 started.”
