JR Motorsports driver Regan Smith heads into Vegas as the championship points leader with a five-point lead over second-place driver Trevor Bayne. Smith won the season opener at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway on Feb. 22, and after two races, is the only series championship-eligible driver with a win to his credit, so far. Sprint Cup driver Kyle Busch was victorious in Nationwide action a week ago at Phoenix International Raceway.
The entry list for Las Vegas has exactly 40 drivers on it, the exact number needed for a full race field in Nationwide Series competition, so as long as there are not late entries, all who make a qualifying attempt on Saturday will garner a starting spot for the race.
Along with Nationwide Series regulars, there are several Sprint Cup Series drivers planning double duty by running Saturday’s Nationwide race. Among them are Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski and Kyle Larson. Although competing for Rookie of the Year in the Sprint Cup Series, Larson is a regular non-championship-eligible driver in the Nationwide Series, as he plans to compete in all races in both series this year.
