Austin Dillon will start from the pole for Friday night’s Sprint Showdown at Charlotte Motor Speedway — the race for two of the final three spots in Saturday’s Sprint All-Star Race, also at CMS. Dillon claimed the pole with a fastest lap time of 27.747 seconds (194.616 mph). He’ll be joined on the front row by A.J. Allmendinger.
Twenty-three cars qualified for the Showdown, with Kyle Larson, Clint Bowyer, Marcos Ambrose and Paul Menard joining Austin Dillon and and Allmendinger in the first three rows by qualifying third through sixth. Qualifying seventh through 10th were Danica Patrick, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Casey Mears and Aric Almirola.
Drivers who have won a race, so far, in 2014 or in 2013 and drivers who have won the All-Star Race in the last 10 years are already qualified for the All-Star event, scheduled for Saturday night, and, therefore, are not racing in the Sprint Showdown. The top-two finishers in Friday’s Showdown will advance to the All-Star Race, as well as the top vote-getter in the online vote among drivers who finish the Sprint Showdown on the lead lap and whose car is still raceable for Saturday night.
