Statistically speaking: a look at Charlotte

facebooktwitterreddit

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races in its own proverbial backyard this weekend with the running of Sunday evening’s Coca-Cola 600, the longest race of the season. Qualifying was held on Thursday, with Jimmie Johnson claiming the pole. Johnson leads active drivers with six trips to victory lane at Charlotte, but those wins all came several years ago when he dominated the track. As of late, Charlotte has become one of Johnson’s worst tracks on the schedule.

But Johnson is winless, so far, in 2014, so Johnson has to be hoping his results this weekend will match his Charlotte results of old, not the ones of recent years. Meanwhile, Kevin Harvick heads into this weekend’s race as the defending winner of the Coca-Cola 600. Brad Keselowski, who’ll start alongside Johnson on the front row on Sunday, is the most recent Charlotte winner, winning at NASCAR’s home track in October of last year.
