All parties involved, or at least those rumored to be involved, are keeping tight-lipped about a possible move from Roush Fenway Racing to Joe Gibbs Racing for Carl Edwards. Meanwhile, another Roush Fenway driver whose contract is up at the end of the year, is rumored to be close to a deal to remain at RFR.
According to a recent report from Motorsport.com, the rumors of Edwards arrival at JGR for 2015 have been substantiated by unnamed sources claiming personnel recruitment and possible sponsor deals at Joe Gibbs Racing.
According to the report, team officials have been recruiting personnel for a fourth Sprint Cup team. Speculation has that fourth seat going to Edwards, or current Joe Gibbs driver Kyle Busch, depending on how you look at it. Currently JGR fields three Sprint Cup cars — the No. 11 driven by Denny Hamlin, the No. 18 driven by Busch and the No. 20 driven by Matt Kenseth.
The unnamed sources are also making sponsorship claims that include M&Ms/Mars going to an Edwards-driven car. The candy company currently sponsor’s Busch’s No. 18. But such a move wouldn’t, reportedly, leave Busch without a sponsor. Word has it that Monster Energy, primary sponsor JGR’s No. 54 Nationwide Series entry that is usually driven by Busch, will step up to be Busch’s primary sponsor at the Sprint Cup level.
Reports don’t seem to specify whether Busch will still be in the No. 18 that will be re-branded with Monster sponsorship or if Edwards will be in the No. 18, putting Busch in the fourth, still-unnumbered, entry. Of course, all Edwards-related decisions at Joe Gibbs Racing are just speculations at this point, anyway.
