Perhaps the first domino of the NASCAR ‘Silly Season’ fell today when multiple sources confirmed that Greg Biffle, the driver of the 16 car for Roush-Fenway Racing, is returning to the team next season. 3M, Biffle’s longtime sponsor, will also return in 2015. Between practices at Pocono earlier this month, Biffle talked to Performance Racing Network. “I really like the program at Roush-Fenway. I really like (sponsor) 3M and that’s really my focus. I have talked with other teams and there are options there but I think Roush is where I want to stay.” “I’m hoping we have it done in the next month or so.”
The announcement could come as early as this weekend in Sonoma or perhaps early next week. Roush-Fenway has been quiet on the rumors, continuing it’s policy of not commenting on drivers’ contract status until an official announcement is made.
Many have thought that both Biffle and his teammate Carl Edwards were seemingly already ‘out the door’ at Roush. This secures one ride for Jack Roush but may also signal Edwards’ departure. Biffle has been the senior member of the Roush team since Matt Kenseth left for Joe Gibbs and that looks to continue. He will look to help newcomer Trevor Bayne in 2015 and fill the primary leadership role looking to be vacated by Edwards.
