Let’s take a few minutes to learn a few fun facts about a Rookie of the Year contender in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series this year. Michael Annett was born in Iowa in 1986 (I got two years on him and I am still waiting for a phone call telling me they have a ride for me in Sprint Cup).
This young man has actually raced in all three main series in the NASCAR racing system. He only raced in eight events in the Camping World Truck Series, but it’s still a great place to learn the sport. Out of those eight races he managed to earn two top 10 finishes.
He faired much better in his six year stint in the Nationwide Series, making 163 starts and earning 34 top 10s. He has always had the competitive drive in his life, as he was a noted hockey player prior to the beginning of his racing career. He actually played for the Waterloo Black Hawks in the United States Hockey League. It’s not quite the NHL but still a part of the upper echelon of Hockey.
In the past few years, Annett has had a rough go of his time on the track. During the Daytona DRIVE4COPD 300 last year, he was involved in a wreck that left him with a dislocated and fractured sternum. He was forced to miss eight races due to his injuries.
He even made a few headlines with his legal antics. Back in 2011 he was arrested for suspicion of DWI and resisting arrest in Mooresville, N.C. following a collision at a stop light.
Fun fact about Michael Annett’s website that I noticed: He wears a Dallas Cowboys Hat in one photo, a Charlotte NBA Jersey and then a Boston Red Sox hat in another.
It would certainly be pretty cool for Annett to come out of nowhere and have a big night at Daytona tonight.
