Brazilian native Nelson Piquet Jr. is set to make his return to NASCAR competition this weekend at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International. Piquet. will make his Sprint Cup Series debutSunday afternoon in the Cheez –it 355 at The Glen.
Piquet spent a number of years competing in both the NASCAR Nationwide Series & NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, but has not competed in a NASCAR-sanctioned event since last November’s NNS finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. After failing to secure a ride for the 2014 season, Piquet turned his attention to other avenues outside of NASCAR.
Piquet was hired by SH racing in the spring of 2014 to compete for the 2014 Global Rally Cross Championship. Through the first five events of the season, he has collected four podium finishes. Prior to embarking on his career in NASCAR, he spent two season competing in Formula One in 2008-2009, collecting one podium finish in 28 career starts.
Sunday’s race at the Glen will mark the return of Randy Humphrey Racing’s #77 Ford to NSCS competition. The last time Randy Humphrey’s car competed on track in a NSCS event was in June at Pocono. Piquet will be guaranteed a starting spot in Sunday’s race since only 43 cars areon the preliminary entry list.
