Allmendinger reinstated - Stock Car Spin - Stock Car Spin - A NASCAR Blog

]]> NASCAR announced on Tuesday that driver A.J. Allmendinger has been reinstated following completion of the sanctioning body’s Road to Recovery program. Allmendinger, formerly driver of the No. 22 Penske Racing Dodge, was temporarily suspended prior to the Coke Zero 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in early July after failing a NASCAR-mandated drug test. After a second sample provided by Allmendinger tested positive for amphetamines, the temporary suspension turned into an indefinite one later in the month.

After being suspended indefinitely, Allmendinger claimed that he tested positive after unknowingly taking Adderall, an amphetamine. He said that a tablet was given to him by a friend of a friend and he was told that it would help with his energy level. Allmendinger said he took the pill without really knowing what it was.

Allmendinger was fired by Penske Racing following the announcement of the indefinite suspension. No announcement has been made regarding a ride for Allmendinger for the remainder of the 2012 season or 2013. Sam Hornish Jr., driver of the No. 12 entry in the Nationwide Series for Penske Racing, has been filling in behind the wheel of the No. 22 since Allmendinger’s suspension. Joey Logano has signed on to drive the No. 22 next year.

Penske fires Allmendinger - Stock Car Spin - Stock Car Spin - A NASCAR Blog

]]> Penske Racing released a statement on Wednesday stating that A.J. Allmendinger has been released from driving duties for the No. 22 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team. Allmendinger was recently suspended indefinitely from NASCAR competition per the sanctioning body’s substance abuse policy after testing positive for amphetamines.

“Penske Racing fully supports NASCAR’s substance abuse policy, and we are disappointed with A.J.’s positive drug test results,” team owner Roger Penske said. “A.J. is a terrific driver, a good person, and it is very unfortunate that we have to separate at this time. We have invested greatly in A.J., and we were confident in his success with our team. The decision to dismiss him is consistent with how we would treat any other Penske Racing team member under similar circumstances. As A.J. begins NASCAR’s ‘Road to Recovery’ program, we wish him the best and look forward to seeing him compete again in NASCAR.”

Allmendinger last raced at Kentucky Speedway on June 30. He was temporarily suspended by NASCAR on July 7, just prior to the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway after his first sample testet positive. A “B” sample was then tested. Results from that test were also positive, resulting in an idefinite suspension last week.

Sam Hornish Jr., one of Penske Racing’s drivers in the Nationwide Series and a former Sprint Cup driver, has been driving the No. 22 Sprint Cup car since the Daytona race.
