]]> After A.J. Allmendinger was notified by NASCAR that he tested positive for a banned substance earlier this month, the driver requested that his “sample B” be tested. NASCAR announced the result of that test on Tuesday evening — another positive. As a result, Allmendinger’s temporary suspension has become an indefinite one.

Soon after NASCAR’s announcement, Shell-Pennzoil, Allmendinger’s now-former sponsor, released the following statement:

“Shell and Pennzoil believe that the process and procedures that NASCAR has in place as part of their substance abuse policy are appropriate and serve to ensure that the sport and its participants are held to the highest standards.

“We share Penske Racing’s disappointment with the result of A.J.’s B sample test and will work closely with them to determine plans moving forward. We hope for the best for A.J. during this difficult time.”

Allmendinger has a chance to return to NASCAR competition, provided he participates in NASCAR’s Road to Recovery Program. According to NASCAR, Allmendinger will be given a letter outlining exactly what he needs to do to be reinstated.

Meanwhile, Sam Hornish Jr.’s return to Sprint Cup competition by driving the No. 22 Penske Racing entry continues.
