When you watch a NASCAR race, which drivers do you feel that your driver is safest racing around?

Based on USA Today’s 2009 crash data, David Stremme probably isn’t one them them. Nor is anybody else from the Penske shop, for that matter.

The data showed that the two drivers with the most crashes in 2009 were David Stremme and Sam Hornish Jr., both of whom come from the Penske shop. The team’s flagship driver, Kurt Busch, didn’t fare too well either, coming in with the 5th most crashes of 2009.

Whether they were the cause of the crashes, or merely innocent victims, these are the 5 drivers who crashed the most in 2009:

1. David Stremme; 23 crashes in 33 races

2. Sam Hornish Jr.; 20 crashes in 36 races

3. Robby Gordon; 18 crashes in 35 races

4. Michael Waltrip; 17 crashes in 34 races

5. Kurt Busch; 14 crashes in 36 races (Note: Scott Speed and Reed Sorenson also had 14 crashes in 2009)

Coincidental or otherwise, these drivers were magnets for disaster in 2009.

But what about the other side of the spectrum? Which drivers were the least likely to attract trouble in 2009?

Believe it or not, Roush-Fenway Racing had 3 drivers in the top 6. The top 5 safest drivers of 2009:

1. Joe Nemechek; 1 crash in 30 races*

2. Dave Blaney; 2 crashes in 30 races*

3. Carl Edwards; 4 crashes in 36 races

3. Matt Kenseth; 4 crashes in 36 races

3. Ryan Newman; 4 crashes in 36 races

Falling just short of the top 5 were Greg Biffle, a teammate to Edwards and Kenseth, and Tony Stewart, a teammate to Newman. Both of whom had 5 crashes apiece in 2009.

*Indicates that the driver was a start-and-park for most of the season
