“The truck was great yesterday in practice,” Justin Lofton said of his No. 6 Eddie Sharp Racing Chevrolet just prior to making his qualifying attempt on Saturday at Chicagoland Speedway during pole qualifying for the American Ethanol 225 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race later that evening.

That same truck was also fast in qualifying, as Lofton went out last and claimed the pole with a 31.007-second lap.

When the Truck Series takes the green flag for the race on Saturday night, Lofton will be joined on the front row by Joey Coulter, who was second-fastest in qualifying with a lap time of 31.035 seconds.

“Too bad second’s not as good as first,” Coulter said after Lofton knocked him from the provisional pole.

Drivers including Jennifer Jo Cobb, Jeff Green, Bryan Silas, Jason White, Miguel Paludo and Timothy Peters claimed the provisional pole for a time during the qualifying session before Ty Dillon took the spot and held it until it was claimed by his Richard Childress Racing teammate, Coulter.

By he end of the qualifying session, Dillon was third, Peters fourth and White fifth.

After 38 drivers made qualifying attempts to set the 36-truck starting grid, Mike Harmon and Chris Lafferty were the two drivers who failed to make the race.

For the third time in the five races so far in 2012, a new face showed up in victory lane. This time around, it was Justin Lofton taking the checkered flag in the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

“This is amazing,” Lofton said in victory lane. “I really don’t know what to do.”

After starting the race from the second spot, alongside pole sitter Ty Dillon on the front row, Lofton struggled getting up to speed on the start and the first restart early in the race, falling back deep into the field in the early going.

“I was worried the first two restarts we had,” Lofton said.

He was able to hold his own, though, once he made his way back toward the front, restarting with the lead and holding on to it on the eighth and final restart of the race with five laps to go to sail on to the win while the rest of the field battled three and four-wide behind him for second.

Brad Keselowski, also in search of his first series win, came out ahead in that battle to finish second, but not before contact with Ron Hornaday on the final restart.

“We had a great Cooper Standard Ram,” Keselowski said. “They did everything they could to wreck me.”

Todd Bodine finished third, Jason Leffler was fourth and Hornaday rounded out the top-five.

The yellow flag waved a total of eight times throughout the 134-lap race, with the No. 14 truck of Brennan Newberry bringing out several of those cautions with multiple spins throughout the race.
