Cassill is suing BK Racing, the team for which he drove during the 2012 Sprint Cup Series season, for $205,000 in unpaid winnings and other fees he claims he is owed.

“I really hated to go the legal route but at the end of the day I’m ultimately asking to be paid what I earned last season,” Cassill said in a statement. “I was excited to race for BK in 2013 and was disappointed when my contract was not renewed for this season.”

According to a recent report in the Sporting News, Cassill is also suing for an addition undisclosed amount for not being notified until January that he would not be racing for BK Racing in 2013. The driver believes that the organization waiting so late to notify him to intentionally make it hard for him to find a new team for which to drive this season.

Cassill finished the 2012 season 31st in the championship points standings while driving for BK Racing. He did not race in the season-opening Daytona 500 in February, as he was still searching for a ride at that time. He was hired by Circle Sport at the end of February and began his season with the second race on the schedule at Phoenix International Raceway in early March.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge of helping advance Circle Sport to the next level of competition in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series,” Cassill said. “I have been a part of an understand what it takes for an upstart organization to compete in the Cup Series.”

The Phoenix race will be Cassill’s first of the year, despite the 2013 Sprint Cup Series season getting underway last weekend at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. Last year, Cassill raced full-time in the series for BK Racing in its first year of Sprint Cup competition.

“They (Circle Sport) have an established relationship with RCR (Richard Childress Racing) that I believe will help us, and with the right marketing partners — a company that wants to grow their involvement in the sport — I believe we have just the right opportunity for them with the No. 33 Chevrolet.”

Prior to 2012, the No. 33 entry was a Richard Childress Racing entry, but car owner Richard Childress sold the assets of the No. 33 to Joe Falk, who formed Circle Sport, early in 2012. Childress’ grandson and NASCAR Nationwide Series regular, Austin Dillon, raced the No. 33 in the 2013 season-opening Daytona 500.

“Landon has a tremendous amount of potential, and we believe we’re building a program that will allow him to showcase his talents,” Falk said. “He has driven for the likes of Hendrick Motorsports and Dale Earnhardt Jr., and we feel that his experience will help our transition to the new Gen-6 car.”
