Less than 24 hours after Richard Childress announced that Drew Blickenserfer had been relieved of crew chief duties with Jeff Burton and the No. 31 RCR NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team on Monday, an announcement from Richard Petty Motorsports on Tuesday morning revealed Blickensderfer’s new job as crew chief for Marcos Ambrose and the No. 9 team there, replacing Mike Ford.

“We have had success this season, and now we’re just looking for more consistency as we prepare for next season,” Ambrose said. “Drew brings a strong resume to our team and can help us find the results that we want each week. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Blickensderfer was in his first year with Childress. He made the move to RCR during the offseason after several years at Roush Fenway Racing. In 33 races with Burton and the No. 31 team, Blickensderfer led the team to two top-fives and six top-10 finishes. Blickensderfer leaves that team with Burton 19th in the points standings.

Blickensderfer did experience success, though, during his time with RFR. While with the Roush Fenway organization, Blickensderfer called the shots for several race wins — including a Daytona 500 victory — working with drivers Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth.

“Drew has a lot of experience with Ford Racing and also how our current operation works,” team owner Richard Petty said. “His knowledge can immediately improve the performance of the No. 9 race team. Marcos has proved to win races and compete in the top-five. The addition of Drew will, hopefully, provide those results on a more consistent basis.”

Blickensderfer was a part of the Ford Racing family when he was with Roush Fenway Racing. Richard Childress Racing is a Chevrolet organization.

Blickensderfer’s replacement at RCR for the remaining three races this season will be Shane Wilson, with Luke Lambert taking over in 2013.

Ford joined RPM at the start of the 2012 season to work as crew chief for Aric Almirola and the No. 43 team, he was moved to Petty’s No. 9 team seven races ago.

On Monday, Richard Petty Motorsports announced changes to its two-team NASCAR Sprint Cup Series program. Crew chief Mike Ford will move from the No. 43 team and driver Aric Amirola to serve as crew chief on the No. 9 team with Marcos Ambrose. Todd Parrott, formerly crew chief for Ambrose and the No. 9 team will move to perform the same duties for Almirola and the No. 43 team. Their respective crews will also make the switch.

“We’re continuing to make improvements at Richard Petty Motorsports, and we’ve added talented people to our organization this season,” RPM Director of Competition Sammy Johns said. “This move is to make sure that we are using that talent to the fullest to get the best results for our teams each weekend.”

The pairing of Ambrose and Parrott got RPM its lone win this season, coming at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) in August. Almirola does not have a Sprint Cup win to his credit.

“Aric has really shown the desire and dedication to get his first Sprint Cup Series win, his new crew chief, Parrott said. “It was great our team helped lead Marcos to his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series win and poles. We are now ready to help direct Almirola and the No. 43 team to the same results and better.”

While the goal for Parrott is to get Almirola his first win, Ford hopes to add to Ambrose’s win total.

“Marcos is a racer who has proven to win poles and races,” Ford said. “Our goal is to take my experiences and make sure we can consistently run up front and continue to win races.”

Both Ford and Parrott are winning crew chiefs, several times over. Parrott has guided teams to 31 Sprint Cup wins, not to mention a Sprint Cup title. Ford, meanwhile, has 25 race wins on his resume.

With 10 races remaining in the 2012 season, the change becomes effective immediately. The competitive debut of the new pairings will come Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway.
