Speedway twice on Saturday, but when the session was finally completed, Timothy Peters, from nearby Danville, Va., was on the pole with a new series track qualifying record time of 19.641 seconds.

“That’s pretty cool, considering I’m a hometown boy,” Peters said.

Peters then shifted his focus to the race, hoping for a performance similar to the dominating show he put on earlier this season at another short-track — Bristol (Ten.) Motor Speedway.

“Hopefully, we can lead 200 laps like we did at Bristol,” he said.

Kevin Harvick qualified second, and Brian Scott was third. Qualifying fourth and fifth were Nelson Piquet Jr. and Denny Hamlin.

Drivers including Josh Richards, Matt Merrell, Ron Hornaday, Justin Lofton and Todd Bodine each spent time as the provisional pole sitter, until Peters turned in a lap to replace his Red Horse Racing teammate Bodine atop the scoring pylon.

Merrell’s qualifying attempt was his first in Camping World Truck Series competition, and also the first for his team, Win-Tron Racing.

“I can’t thank the guys at Win-Tron Racing enough,” Merrell said. “We just threw this thing together.”

By the end of the session, none of the provisional pole sitters prior to Peters were in the top-10.

“I left a lot out there,” Ron Hornaday, who wound up 16th said of his qualifying attempt.

Qualifying sixth through 10th were Ty Dillon, Matt Crafton, Johnny Sauter, Jeff Agnew and James Buescher.

Forty-one drivers made attempts for the 36 available spots on the starting grid. Drivers failing to make the race included Grant Enfinger, Brennan Newberry, Dennis Setzer, Jake Crum and Todd Peck.

Timothy Peters turned in a dominating performance in Wednesday night’s UNOH 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Bristol (Ten.) Motor Speedway, leading every lap of the event en route to his second win of the season and sole possession of the series championship points lead.

“What an awesome feeling,” Peters said in victory lane. “I just thank the Lord for being with me and letting me win two in one year.”

Parker Kligerman finished second to his teammate to give Red Horse Racing a one-two finish. Ross Chastain was third.

Peters got out in front of pole sitter Cale Gale on lap one and didn’t look back. For the first 63 laps of the race’s 200-lap scheduled distance, Gale ran second until he was passed by Brad Keselowski on lap 64.

The race ran caution free until lap 81, setting a record for the longest green-flag run to start a truck race at Bristol and the longest opening green-flag run in a Truck Series event anywhere since the Milwaukee Mile in 2005.

Another Red Horse Racing driver, Todd Bodine, got off pit road second to Peters on that first caution to give the team the first two spots in the runninng order, but Keselowski got by Bodine to reclaim second on lap 112.

Bodine wound up getting caught up in an incident with Gale with 41 laps to go and sustaining enough damage to eliminate him from the event.

“The 33 (Gale) got up under us and just pushed,” Bodine said. “That was racing. That was close racing.”

Gale wrecked several laps later when the field bunched up on a restart to bring out another caution, the sixth and final caution of the race that set things up for a green-white-checkered attempt to finish the race.

Both Keselowski and Ty Dillon ran out of fuel soon after the final restart.

“I just kept running out of gas,” Keselowski said.

Peters and Dillon headed into Bristol tied for the points lead. After the race, Peters had a 17-point lead over James Buescher, who moved into second by finishing seventh. Dillon slipped to third.

Joey Coulter finished the race in the fourth spot and Joey Coulter rounded out the top-five.
